We are VERY excited about the upcoming eclipse, are you?  Join us on eclipse day!  Here are some details.

  • You do NOT need to buy or reserve tickets for the eclipse viewing.  Just show up.
  • We will be viewing the eclipse outside both in front and behind the Rainier building.
  • The planetarium presentation inside the Science Dome explaining the ins and outs of solar eclipses is at 8:30 am, 9:15 am, 11 am  and 11:45 am, first-come, first-served – no reservations (Red times just added so we can accommodate more people.)
  • Parking – The “A” parking lot is the closest to the Rainier building/eclipse viewing, but be prepared to walk across campus if it is full.  Here is a campus map. Please do not park in the employee parking.  All other parking is fine.

We will provide:

  • SAFE ways to view the eclipse (eclipse glasses, pinhole cameras, sun spotters, telescopes with solar filters, etc)
  • Hands-on eclipse related activities
  • A live stream of the eclipse from the path of totality

Some facts about the eclipse:

  • From Lakewood we will see a partial eclipse, the moon will cover 94% of the sun.
  • Eclipse starts at 9:08 am, is maximum at 10:20 am and ends at 11:38 am.
  • People from every part of the United States will be able to see at least a partial eclipse.

Safety tips:

  • Even with 94% of the sun obscured it is NOT safe to look at the sun without proper equipment.
  • Sunglasses are NOT good enough to protect your eyes.
  • The only thing you can see in proper eclipse glasses is the sun, they block out more than 99% of the light.
  • If you can’t make it out to join us and do not have eclipse glasses you can make a pinhole camera to view the eclipse safely.

We will be handing out eclipse glasses on eclipse day but cannot do so before then.
