WOODLAND HILLS (CBS) — Donations from all walks of life have saved the historic farm at Pierce College.
The school’s landmark working farm was founded in1947 and has trained students to care for cattle, sheep, pigs and poultry. State budget cuts had forced the college to cut the farm’s supply budget, as costs for supplies like feed skyrocketed – making the farm’s closure a possibility.
But the college recently got a $150,000 donation from the Annenberg Foundation, which will allow the farm to keep operating for another three years.
The unique “Pre-Vet Program” transfers about 200 students a year to the nation’s top veterinary schools.
Other small donations also helped the farm, including $621 from a kindergarten class at Haynes Street Elementary — funds reportedly collected from piggy banks.
